The first step in creating leverage is:

Now list all the reasons you can think of why you know you can do it.

Step number three in creating leverage. This is the most important step and I will explain why. If you don’t do anything else, DO THIS. You’re mind needs these specific associations to have the resources available on an unconscious level to make it very easy for you to get used to your new lifestyle as a non-smoker.

Your brain functions in the following way: All decisions are designed to move you away from (avoid) pain and move you towards pleasure. If you link enough pain to a behavior, and enough pleasure to the new desired behavior, your mind will bend-over-backwards to change the behavior. To create these vital associations (that you evidently do not have or you would have already succeeded in becoming a non-smoker) you must complete the following exercise:

List everything that represents the personal price that you will have to pay (health, self-respect, relationships, longevity, well being, etc) if you don’t stop smoking.

List all the painful things that you can think of, of not stopping – over next year, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years. Use your imagination, the more real the pain that you imagine, the stronger the leverage. (What you will see, hear, and feel – the emotions you’ll feel relating to this pain.)

List everything that represents the benefits that you will receive (health, self-respect, relationships, longevity, well being, etc) as a non-smoker. All the pleasures that you can think of, of being a non-smoker – over next year, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years. Use your imagination, the more real the pleasure that you imagine, the stronger the leverage. (What you will see, hear, smell, taste, touch and the emotions you’ll feel)
